- As Premier of Western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo implemented free healthcare and education for children, built the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television Service (WNTS) in 1959, the first modern stadium in West Africa, Liberty Stadium, Ibadan in 1960. He named Nigeria’s currency as Naira when he was Federal Commissioner for finance. As a businessman, he also founded the oldest surviving Nigerian newspaper, Nigerian Tribune, in 1949.
