- On this day in 1966, Yakubu Gowon became Nigeria’s Head of State, following a counter-coup that ousted the previous regime headed by General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. Gowon was overthrown in a coup by Murtala Muhammed on July 29, 1975 he was attending an Organization of African Unity (OAU) meeting in Kampala, Uganda.
