- The Nigerian Civil War took place between July 6, 1967 and January 15, 1970 between Nigeria and Biafra. Worried over the persecution of Igbo people in Northern Nigeria, Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu, the military governor of the Eastern Region, announced a secession on May 30, 1967 and renamed the region as Republic of Biafra. Ojukwu fled to Côte d’Ivoire four days before Biafran representatives formally surrendered in Lagos, ending the Republic of Biafra. Estimates of the casaulty figure of the war vary significantly between 500, 000 to three million.
