- On this day in 1967, race riots broke out in Newark, New Jersey, killing 26 people and injuring several others. The violence began when two white policemen arrested a black cab driver.
- On this day in 2009, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) agreed to terms of an amnesty programme offered by Nigeria’s federal government. Its leader, Henry Okah, signed the agreement. Since 2006, MEND had sabotaged oil production in the Niger Delta region.
