- On this day in 1970, General Odumegwu-Ojukwu handed over power to his second in command, Chief of General Staff Major-General Philip Effiong and absconded the short-lived Republic of Biafra during Nigeria’s Civil War for Côte d’Ivoire where he was granted political asylum.
- On this day in 1861, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired. The steamer, Star of the West, was fired upon by the Confederates as it attempted to enter Charleston Harbor
