  • On this day in 1998, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 cancelled presidential election in Nigeria, died in detention while meeting with a delegation from the United States, headed by Thomas Pickering and Susan Rice. His death sparked protest across the country.
  • On this day in 1985, Boris Becker became the youngest person to win Wimbledon at age 17. The German tennis player beat American Kevin Curren.
