- CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos is the oldest secondary school in Nigeria. Founded by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) on June 6, 1859, it started with six pupils. The first principal of the school was Rev Babington Macaulay, who served until his death in 1878. He was the father of Herbert Macaulay.
- In 2013, the first artificially reproduced human tooth was created in China. The scientists were able to create the tooth using stem cells extracted from human urine.

- On this day in 1849, American poet and author, Edgar Allen Poe, was seen in public for the last time when he was found sick and delirious on the streets and taken to Washington College Hospital, where he died a few days later. He was 40 years old at the time of his death.
- On this day in 1932, Iraq gained independence from the United Kingdom. The West Asian country came under British control in 1920, after the end of the First World War. After taking control of the country, the British installed the deposed Syrian King Faisal I as the King of Iraq.
