A new Caretaker Committee was inaugurated on Saturday, October 12, 2024, to pilot the administration of Lagos Country Club.
The Caretaker Committee, which equally has the mandate to ensure that an elected executive should be in place within two months, was recently appointed at an Extraordinary General Meeting of members of the club.
The ceremony, which was witnessed by a large turnout of members, was performed by Mr. Tajudeen Akande and Arc. Funmi Bamkole, both past Presidents of the Club.
The 13 member Committee, which is led by Mr. Adewole Gege, as Chairman also has Adetayo Adegboye as Secretary and Harris Isa-Olawole as Legal Adviser.
Other members of the Committee sworn in were the Chairmen of the 10 Sections; Ayodeji Oshikoya (Swimming), Barr. Nimota Omope (Tennis), Abiodun Bamgbade (Table Tennis), Semoore Badejo (Squash), Tunde Thani (Scrabble), Unbiased Azeez (Badminton), Princess Tola Oladoyin (Other Games), Kunbi Akin-Taylor (Darts), Tomi Olurinola (Snooker/Billiards) and Augustine Elugbaju (Aerobics/Taekwondo).
Inaugurating the Committee, Mr. Akande charged them to work assiduously to uphold their Oaths of Office.
He encouraged members to tow the path of peace amidst the crisis in the Club, stressing that the “this is the beginning of the end of the crisis,”
Mr Akande told members to continue to conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates that they are for peace, progress, and stability of the Club.
According to him, “those of us that have served this club in whatever capacity know the sacrifices it takes on you as a person, on your time, on your business and your financial resources. The reason I’m here this evening is because I have a stake, and we can not continue to watch this entity that we have sacrificed so much to keep running to break down.”
In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Adewole Gege promised that the Committee would do all within its power to discharge its responsibilities within the stipulated time.
Mr. Gege invited all members to participate in this process by coming forward with their ideas, concerns, and suggestions which they would work on to create an inclusive and thriving members ‘club as well as ensure the realisation of its fill potentials.
The generality of the members of the Club thanked the members of the Caretaker Committee for accepting to serve at this critical period in the history of the club. They believed that there is no dual leadership in the Club as the tenure of the Consent Judgement inspired Caretaker Committee expired on October 11, 2024 which informed the Extraordinary General Meeting, the highest decision making body Club convened to appoint the new Caretaker Committee to restore harmony as well as conduct election within two months.
A member, Mrs Module Bamgbopa, described the inauguration of the new Caretaker Committee as the right step.
She said, “we need to move past whatever problems it is we have because the Club has been retrogressing for some months now. I believe this new development is the wish of the people. ”
In her view, “We are all members here, and when EGM takes a decision, it should supercede any other decision taken by any other group.
Founded in 1949, Lagos Country Club Ikeja is one of Nigeria’s foremost sports and family clubs.
