Nigeria’s foremost sports and family club, Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, recently hosted Ghana’s Tesano Sports Club in an international sports friendly.
The event which was held on Saturday, March 2 at Lagos Country Club saw members of both clubs compete in Swimming, Squash, Badminton, Tennis, Table Tennis, Chess, Darts and Draughts.
Earlier in the day, the Ghanaians participated in an aerobics fitness programme at the Club. They later re-converged at the Club for lunch and kickstarted the games at the various sections.
To crown the event, both teams traded tackles in a 5-Aside football game which saw Lagos Country Club winning by five goals to two. However, in a gesture of ‘collaboration over competition’, the President of Lagos Country Club, Mr Seyi Adewunmi, presented the winning trophy to the Chairman of Tesano Sports Club, Mr Patrick Arthur.
Arthur was excited and thanked the President and members of Lagos Country Club for hosting them to sports and socials.
“This is the first time we are playing 5-A-side football in any competition,” he said.
It is something new to us. But next time, we would be better prepared to win.”
Speaking on the event, the Sports Secretary of Lagos Country Club, Mr Babajide Egbele, described it as progressive partnership at its finest.
“Last year we were in Ghana and they hosted us,” Egbele said.
“They were amazed at our facilities which were top notch and we are looking at areas we can collaborate to develop recreational sports, like a partnership, whereby members of Tesano club can make use of our club facilities whenever they visit, and vice versa. They have enjoyed themselves and it’s been equally competitive; Commendations kept on pouring as to how good we were. Above all, it’s about friendship, networking, recreation, family and socialising.”
After the prize presentation, gifts were exchanged while socials followed and members were treated to the best of Lagos hospitality in terms of music, food and drinks.
In October 2023, Lagos Country Club visited Tesano Sports Club in Accra for friendly games. After the games, Tesano Club’s Chairman promised to lead his members to Lagos on a visit this year.
