- On this day in 1969, the Nigerian Federal Forces launched a major offensive and captured Umuahia, forcing the Biafran capital to move to Owerri in the final days of the Nigerian Civil War, leading to Biafra’s eventual surrender just weeks later in January 1970.
- On this day in 1914, the Christmas Truce began. It was a brief unofficial ceasefire between British and German troops along the Western Front of World War I. During the truce, soldiers from both sides sang carols, shared food, exchanged gifts and played football.
